Root to Rise

Yoga for Mind, Body, and Soul.

Root to rise is a common yoga mantra that means to establish a strong foundation on the ground before extending or expanding into a pose. It's also sometimes phrased as “ground down to lift up”. The idea behind “root to rise” is that the body's stability comes from the part of it that's in contact with the ground. The mantra helps students:


  • Root down into their feet, knees, elbows, or hips
  • Find their foundation
  • Rise up into a posture with stability, safety, and confidence
  • Pay close attention to how they plant their feet, hands, and forearms
  • Activate the muscles above the foundation
